Arroyo Colorado

March 31, 2010

Hello Arroyo Partners:

We have been having some very pleasant spring weather here in the Rio Grande Valley.  I hope it stays that way for a little while.

I had the watershed model on display at the StormFury:The Science of Weather event held at the Brownsville Children's Museum & Ringgold Civic Pavilion last Saturday.  The event was a lot of fun and the exhibits were great because they were all focused on the science of weather.  Joe Hinojosa, the Storm Water Task Force Chair, and Dr. Jude Benavides, the Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee Chair were both in attendance. The museum was packed and everyone had a great time.

The Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership will be hosting an Arroyo Colorado Steering Committee meeting on April 22, from 5:00-7:00 pm.  Food and refreshments will be served from 4:30-5:00 pm.  The meeting will be held at The Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center located at 3301 S. FM 1015.  After the ACSC meeting, The TCEQ will host a public meeting to gather information for a Recreational Use Attainability Analysis (RUAA) survey for the Arroyo Colorado.  The purpose of the survey is to determine actual and potential recreational uses in the Arroyo and, if necessary, to assign a more appropriate use.

The Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership will be hosting an Arroyo Colorado Waste Water Infrastructure meeting on April 29th, from 10:30 am -12:00 noon at the Texas Agrilife Extension Center Conference room.  The extension center is located at 2401 E. Expressway 83 in Weslaco, TX.

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming events:

  • The Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership will be partnering with local cities and the Valley Proud Environmental Council for the Valley wide "Trash Bash" to be held April 10th, from 8-12.
  • The City of McAllen's 4th annual Vida Verde Earth Day Festival will be held on April 17th, from 9am-4pm.
  • The city of San Juan's grand opening of their wetlands will be held on April 22nd, from 8-12.
  • This year Dragonfly Days will be a 3 day event held on May 14th-16th in Weslaco.  This event will be a joint effort between The Valley Nature Center and The Estero Llano Grande World Birding Center.  I have attached a flyer listing the dates and times of the various events.

I have not been able to get away to get some fishing in.  Too much yard work!

Looking ahead,
